Marking of lead on listed buildings

Signature Materials marked lead sheet on the roof of a listed Church this week, previously hit by lead thieves. The mark provides traceability back to the church should the lead be stolen. This marking was done as part of the process of gaining approval from the Church of England and English Heritage to allow marking to be done to deter theft, without affecting the aesthetics of the listed building. The type/size of mark has been through consultation with English Heritage hence the trial to confirm that the visual impact is negligible, the only way to  notice the marks is very close up, and hence it would be seen by either a thief or a roof contractor ! Coupled with signage and other deterrents this should provide another weapon in the armoury for heritage buildings in the fight against lead theft, and the costs/problems that this can cause.
